Trial set for police anti-porn helper

The trial of a former Earl Marriott Secondary athletic director accused of possessing child pornography has been delayed – again.

Sam Van Ieperen’s case was scheduled for three days in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster starting Wednesday (April 2), after a four-day trial was adjourned last summer.

It is now on the books for Dec. 8-10 – more than three years after members of the RCMP’s Integrated Child Exploitation Team arrested Van Ieperen at EMS.

Last year, prosecutor Winston Sayson expressed concern at the first delay, noting the potential impact of time on witnesses’ memories.

He reiterated his frustrations Tuesday.

“The Crown is certainly concerned about the constant adjournments and delays,” he said.

“There is a huge public interest to have these kind of cases dealt with (expeditiously).”

Sayson said the reason for the delay is the same as last time – a conflict with the trial of Liberal ministerial aides David Basi and Bob Virk, who are facing charges in connection with the 2003 sale of Crown-owned B.C. Rail line to CN Rail.

Basi’s defense lawyer, Michael Bolton, is the same man defending Van Ieperen.
