The Sûreté du Québec is investigatingwhat
they suspect is a case of severe child abuse after a
baby boy from Valleyfield was taken to the Ste. Justine
Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The infant was first taken to a hospital in Valleyfield
on Friday where doctors determined his injuries were
so severe he required a transfer to the Montreal hospital,
which specializes in child care.
The Montreal hospital contacted police after the baby
was examined. The infant was still at the hospital Thursday
where he was reported to be in critical condition.
"Our investigation is continuing with the goal
of determining who caused the injuries to the young
child and how. So far there are no arrests," said
Sgt. Michel Brunet, of the Sûreté du Québec.
"We want to be very certain of who
did what."
Investigators have interviewed the baby's parents as
well as their friends and relatives. The baby's mother
and father are both 19 and from Valleyfield.
