Investigators looking into the death of a two-year-old in Victoria, B.C. earlier this week hope to have answers following an autopsy scheduled for Monday.

The child was rushed to hospital on Wednesday with massive head injuries, and died soon after.

Victoria police sent the major crimes squad to the home where the boy lived, to investigate.

However, officials say it's too early to jump to conclusions.

"It could be any of a wide number of things at this point and until we've done a lot more investigating we just won't know what it is, other than it is really tragic for this family," Barb McLintock, of the B.C. Coroner's Service, told CTV British Columbia.

CTV B.C.'s Jim Beatty has learned the boy was known to the province's Ministry of Children and Family Development, and may have been in the province's care -- though the department is saying little at the moment.

"I am aware of the tragic death of a two-year-old in Victoria and understand the coroner's office is following up on that and I think we're all awaiting additional information to find out what happened," said Child and Family Development Minister Tom Christensen.

All child deaths in B.C. are reported to the coroner, and those that are not deemed to be the result of natural causes, are investigated.

McLintock said the results of Monday's autopsy will give investigators a better idea of what happened.

"Once we get some idea from the pathologist who are investigating of what they think might have actually happened, we'll have a better idea what direction this might be headed in," she said.

The autopsy will be done in the Lower Mainland.
